Fort Lincoln School House Endowment Fund

Profile

This Designated Fund was established by Gary McIntosh in 2025 to provide operational support for the Fort Lincoln School in Fort Scott. Gary shared the following about his inspiration for creating the fund:

"The inspiration behind creating this account comes from a desire to preserve and honor the legacy of one-room country schools that shaped the lives of my own family and community. In particular, it is dedicated to Fort Lincoln School, originally located near Fulton, Kansas.

My hope is that this effort will encourage others to learn more about the role foundations can play in protecting history. Beyond the few preserved examples (such as in Lawrence, KS), I hope more schools and communities will include country schools and other historic buildings in their educational and cultural work .

This is not just about preserving buildings - it's about preserving the stories, values, and legacies that remind us of where we came from and inspire where we are going!'

The Molly Foster Berry Chapter DAR Chapter is assisting with fundraising for this endowment fund as well.

"I'm impressed by the spring board one room schools created for young men and women to teach and then pursue other careers. Iola's famous General Fred Funston attended one and then taught before later pursuing a military career. My own grandfather taught until the local bank cashier got drafted and he was asked to fill in.....when WWI ended and the cashier returned Claud Gilpin decided to pursue a career in banking - first as an examiner and later after many years as an owner. The Fort Lincoln School Museum is a wonderful time capsule of students and teachers who produced the Greatest Generation" . - Jim Gilpin, president of Fort Scott SAR Chapter
